Patience, perspective and perseverance, are the themes of Surabhi Choudhary’s body of work. A series of dots recurring throughout her works symbolises the first virtue — patience. As she states, “Life is a work in progress, and the painstaking technique of creating the dotted motif is a reference to this fact.” Choudhary especially values this trait in her creative process because of the level of precision and time that this approach demands. Placing each dot correctly demands
extreme scrutiny over an extended period of time, and patience enables prolonged focus on the task at hand without frustration or overwhelm.

A few dots in Choudhary’s work are inspired by memories of her childhood home. Nostalgic recollections of railings, stairwells and floor plans take form in a style reminiscent of architectural blueprints. Some dots elude the naked eye, veiled by a layer of paint — an allusion to the myriad conscious and subconscious memories we hold in our minds.

The motif of stairs stands for the ups and downs experienced in life — the highs and lows, success and loss. Each step indicates a challenge or an obstacle to overcome. When moving forward, it is natural to encounter various such steps, some easy to navigate, and others more difficult. These stairs are an unflinching reminder to be patient and resilient, while lending a unique perspective at every step. In this series, Choudhary observes that most obstacles may be overcome and many goals achieved by an astute combination of patience, perspective, and perseverance.
